Matcha is a stone-ground Japanese green tea. Rather than traditional tea, where the leaf is steeped than discarded, matcha is a suspension, where the entire leaf is consumed.

Young tencha leaves are harvested, then steamed to stop oxidation and dried, before getting ground by large stone mills to create matcha.

Per serving, matcha contains approximately 70mg of caffeine. Harvest to harvest that amount could fluctuate, but we like to say one tsp of matcha is equivalent to about half a cup of prepared drip coffee.

Along with caffeine, matcha also contains an amino acid called L-theanine, which helps reduce potentially negative side effects of caffeine, to help you feel both calm but alert.

Traditionally, there are a few tools that make your matcha experience easier, such as a bamboo whisk called a chasen, a handheld milk frother, or a matcha bowl to whisk in, called a chawan. Although there are ways to make matcha without these tools, a latte is usually not as convenient.
